Market Day is the big day! This event is one of the largest one day flea markets in the state. A crowd assembles at Plant Hall before daylight. They are experienced shoppers, bringing their own carryalls, and reviewing shopping strategies. Doors open at 9 o’clock Saturday morning, and hundreds of shoppers storm the University of Tampa's administration building, scooping bargains on toys, tools, and appliances, dishes, silverware and books. Chiselers don black aprons and become shop clerks while husbands stand security and checkout. Delicious food is available for sale for the shoppers to relax and revive their shopping strength. They know that the Chiselers receive valuable donations during a yearlong collection, and they know it will all be gone by 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon.
During Market Week, Chiselers gather to unpack a warehouse of gently used household goods… while husbands eat frozen dinners and children double up in their carpools. Throughout the year, Chiselers have collected, cleaned and repaired the thousands of items that stock this annual indoor garage sale. Items are wrapped in paper saved from previous years’ sales and stored in boxes reused year after year. The week before Market Day, hundreds of boxes are delivered to Plant Hall where they are re-opened and unpacked.
Each item for sale will be displayed in one of many departments. Collectibles, China and Silver greet you in the lobby. Art, Plants & Flowers are on the East veranda, Furniture occupies the West verandas. Jewelry is displayed in the hallway. Books and Boutique share a salon. Electrical Items & Tools and Toys each have their own nook beside the ULTIMATE BARGAIN CENTER in the Grand Salon.
